Give Them Something to Win: Contests, Raffles, and Birthday Clubs That Bring Them Back

Everyone loves a chance to win, and everyone loves being remembered on their birthday.

Excitement is a marketing strategy. A monthly raffle, a fun contest, or a birthday club gives people a reason to walk in on an ordinary weeknight — and every entry or sign-up adds a name to a customer list you own. The prize costs you very little, but the visit it creates brings a whole table with it. A pizza shop raffling a free pie, a BBQ joint giving away a family platter, a Thai place offering a free dinner for two: the prize is small, but the table it fills orders a full meal.

The numbers back it up. In one loyalty-program study, 53% of guests who received a birthday reward came in to redeem it, and birthday tables spend far more than a solo visit, because the birthday guest never comes alone. That is the whole idea: give people something to look forward to, and they bring their people with them. Here is how to run it, piece by piece.

1

Run a monthly raffle, and draw it on a slow night.

Every visit earns an entry — a receipt in the jar, a ticket at the register. Draw the winner on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening, and watch the room fill with people hoping to hear their name. The raffle gives regulars a reason to come in one more time this month, and the drawing turns your slowest night into an event. Keep the entry simple: no forms, no apps, just a ticket with a visit. Announce the winner in person and on your social pages, so even the people who missed the drawing hear about it and plan to be there next month.

2

Run contests customers enter from their phones.

Best food photo, name our new dish, guess the secret ingredient in the sauce. The prize is a free meal, and every entry is free social media content showing your food to the entrant's friends. A photo contest works for every kind of restaurant: the tallest burger stack at a diner, the cheesiest slice at a pizzeria, the prettiest curry at a Thai spot. Keep the rules short and the judging public — let customers vote, and announce the winner where everyone can see it. Each entry reaches people you could never afford to advertise to, and it costs you one free meal.

3

Start a birthday club — the highest-return list you will ever build.

Guests sign up with a birthday and a phone number through a QR code at the table. In their birthday month they get a free treat — a free slice at a pizza shop, a free dessert, a free side with a barbecue entrée — and they bring three or four friends with them. That is why this is the highest-return list you will ever build: every name on it is a guaranteed table, once a year, with guests attached. Sign-ups cost you nothing but a small card or QR code on the table, and the list only grows. Remind members a week before their birthday month, and again in the middle of the month, so the visit actually happens.

4

Do not forget the half-birthday.

A half-birthday offer gives you a second celebration six months later, in the slow half of the year, from the same list you already built. One operator reported that nearly all of his half-birthday offers were redeemed. It works because it is unexpected — nobody else remembers a half-birthday — and because it lands in the months when you need the traffic most. Same treat, same friends, same full table, six months after the first visit, from a list you built once. Send the half-birthday message the same way you send the birthday one, and keep the offer just as simple.

5

Make the prize small for you and big for them.

A free slice, a free spring roll with a Thai entrée, a free appetizer — the prize itself costs a few dollars, but it brings in a table that orders a full meal. The prize is not the cost. The empty table is the cost. Keep prizes to things your kitchen already makes, so the cost stays low and the quality stays high, and never let a prize feel cheap: a free dessert served with a candle and a smile feels like a celebration, not a coupon. The goal is never the prize itself. The goal is the table of four that came with it, and the three of them who will come back on their own.

Where to start

Start with the birthday club this week: put a QR code sign-up on every table and at the register, and offer the free treat in the birthday month. Next month, start the raffle jar and pick your slowest weeknight for the first drawing. One list, one drawing, one celebration at a time — that is how an ordinary weeknight becomes the night people plan around.
