EDDM Promotions: What Restaurants Need to Know
Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) is one of the most effective ways for local restaurants to drive foot traffic and takeout orders. Dropping a beautiful, oversized takeout menu directly into nearby mailboxes builds instant local awareness.
A common compliance trap is trying to slide a separate loose coupon sheet, event flyer, or catering menu inside a folded takeout mailer. USPS now treats unattached inserts as separate pieces of mail, which can lead to a rejected batch or more expensive First-Class postage.
You can still deliver extra promotional content legally by using smart design techniques that satisfy USPS flat-size and self-mailer requirements. Confirm the current USPS rules for your finished piece before mailing.
Integrate the Flyer Directly into the Layout
The easiest compliant approach is to print extra flyer content directly onto your menu. Instead of treating the menu and flyer as separate pieces, expand the menu from a 3 fold to a 4 folded takeout menu
For example, upgrade a standard tri-fold menu to a larger 11 × 17 inch sheet and use a four-panel or roll-fold layout. That added space can feature a seasonal catering package, weekend brunch special, or a coupon strip.
When promotional information is printed directly on one cohesive piece of paper or catalog, it counts as a single Marketing Mail flat. You can also print an 8 or 16 page catalog type takeout menu. As long as the pages are glued or stapled into one menu mailer, this will qualify for 26 cents postage with the every door direct program ( EDDM )
Use Official Seals and Tabs
If a separate piece of paper is necessary for a promotion, specials or live entertainment the menu needs to be fully sealed on all open sides to create a closed packet. Ask your printer for advice
USPS self-mailer rules require a piece containing an enclosure to stay securely closed through automated machine sorting. Secure the flyer inside the folds with translucent wafer seals (tabs) or automated glue dots.
The finished piece must act like a single secure booklet and should not allow the insert to fall out when shaken.
Watch Your Weight and Dimensions
When you increase the paper size or add an approved sealed insert, closely monitor EDDM’s physical boundaries. Your final folded restaurant piece must still qualify as an EDDM flat.
It must be more than 10.5 inches long or more than 6.125 inches high, while remaining under 15 inches long and 12 inches high. Everything combined must weigh less than 3.3 ounces.
Exceeding the weight limit can move a shipment out of the affordable EDDM-Retail pricing bracket. By printing promotions on a larger sheet or using secure wafer tabs, restaurants can deliver comprehensive menus and high-converting flyers in a single compliant local mailing.
