QR Codes That Do More Than Show a Menu
That little square can take the next order, earn the review, and join the loyalty club.
Everybody scans now — but most restaurants waste the scan on a plain PDF menu. The customer points their phone, gets a file they have to pinch and scroll, and closes it. That scan was a moment of attention, and it went nowhere.
A QR code can do three jobs at once: bring the next order straight to you instead of a third-party app, capture a Google review while the customer is still happy, and sign someone up for your loyalty program in one tap. Print them where customers already look — the bag, the box, the receipt, the table — and every scan starts working for you.
Next order:
A QR code on the bag and box that opens your own direct ordering page skips the app fees and keeps the customer yours. The customer who just ate your food is the most likely person to order again — catch them while the meal is still warm, with the easiest path back to you. Every order that comes direct instead of through an app keeps the fee in your pocket and the customer's name on your list. A pizza shop's box, a Thai place's bag, a BBQ joint's wrapper — each one is a second order waiting to happen.
Review:
A QR code on the receipt or thank-you card that opens your Google review form catches customers at their happiest moment. Right after a great meal, people want to say so — make it one scan, no searching, no typing your name. Ask in plain words on the receipt: "Loved it? Scan here and tell Google." The review they write tonight is the reason a stranger picks you tomorrow. Wait until next week to ask, and the feeling is gone; ask while they are still smiling, and the words write themselves.
Loyalty:
A QR code that joins the program in one tap — no app download, no password — turns a first visit into a second one. Signing up should take ten seconds: scan, phone number, done. Put it on the table tent and the bag, and let the customer join before the food is even cold. A first-time guest who joins the program leaves as a regular, because the next visit already has a reward waiting. An app download kills that moment; a one-tap code saves it.
Track them separately.
A different QR code for the menu, the bag, the table, and the postcard tells you exactly which placement is doing the work. If the bag code brings ten orders and the table code brings none, you know where to spend your effort. Free tools make a different code for each spot, and the count tells the story — no guessing, no arguing about which placement earns its keep. Check the counts once a month, and put more codes where the scans already are.
Keep the destination fast.
A page that loads in seconds gets used; a slow page wastes the scan and the customer. Test every code yourself, on your own phone, on regular cell service — not just the restaurant Wi-Fi. If the page takes more than a few seconds, fix it before you print a thousand bags. A fast page feels like good service; a slow one feels like a locked door. The scan is a promise, and the page is where you keep it.
Where to start
This week, make three codes — one for ordering on the bag, one for reviews on the receipt, one for loyalty on the table — and test each one on your own phone. Print the ones that work, count the scans, and add the rest once the first three are earning.
