Own Your Customer List: SMS and Email That Bring People Back

Social media rents you an audience — your own list is yours, and it answers.

Third-party apps own the customer relationship, and their fees prove it. Your own SMS and email list flips that: text messages are opened around 98% of the time, and email returns roughly $36 for every $1 spent. One short message can fill a slow Tuesday, and a win-back message can bring back customers you have not seen in months. Social media rents you an audience — the platform can change the rules tomorrow. Nobody can change the algorithm on a list you own.

1

Collect at every touchpoint.

At checkout, on the receipt, with a QR code on the menu and the bag — "text JOIN to get this week's special." Every order is a chance to earn the next one. Ask in person too: "Want our Tuesday special by text?" Most customers say yes when the offer is clear and the ask is quick. Put the signup where customers already look — the counter, the bag, the menu, the receipt — and never make them hunt for it. A pizza shop's bag sticker, a BBQ joint's counter card, a Thai place's menu code: every one of them is a door into your list.

2

Get permission and keep your promise.

Only send what you said you would send, and make it easy to stop. Trust is the whole asset. If you promised one text a week, send one text a week. If someone replies STOP, stop at once, no questions. A list built on permission answers; a list built on tricks gets blocked, reported, and ignored. Tell people exactly what they are signing up for — "one special a week, no spam" — and then be the place that keeps its word. That promise is worth more than any single offer.

3

One short message, one offer, one action.

Weekly at most, never daily. A long newsletter gets deleted; a short offer gets redeemed. The best messages fit on a phone screen without scrolling: the offer, the day, and what to do. "Thursday only: free garlic knots with any large pie. Show this text." That is the whole message. One offer at a time, or customers cannot decide — and a customer who cannot decide does nothing. Send it at the same time each week so people start to watch for it, the way they watch for the mail.

4

Win back the customers you have lost.

Message anyone you have not seen in 60 to 90 days with a real reason to return — a new dish, a special night, a welcome-back offer. These are people who already liked you once; they just drifted away. A short, warm message — "We miss you — your favorite is back on the menu Thursday" — works better than a discount, because it reminds them why they came in the first place. Do this once a month, and your lost customers become your cheapest new customers, because you already paid to win them once.

5

Measure redemptions, not likes.

The message that filled seats is the one that worked. Track which offer brought people in and repeat that one. Count redemptions: how many people showed the text, used the code, or mentioned the email. Ignore opens and likes — they do not pay the rent. Keep a simple tally by the register for a month, and you will know exactly which messages earn their keep and which ones to retire. Then do more of what filled the room, and stop paying attention to the rest.

Where to start

This week, put the signup QR code on the menu and the bag, and send your first message to the customers you already have: one offer, one day, one action. Next month, send your first win-back message to the 60-to-90-day names. One list, one message a week, and a monthly win-back — that is a system that brings people back all year.
